About us

Stokvels have run on trust for generations. We just gave that trust somewhere to live.

Stokvel Chommie started from a simple observation: millions of South Africans run their savings groups on WhatsApp messages, cash books, and memory — and almost none of the software built for "fintech" or "community banking" is actually built around how a stokvel works.

Why this exists

A stokvel doesn't fail because people don't want to save together. It fails, or fractures, when someone can't remember who paid what, when a payout gets disputed, or when the person keeping the books is also the only person who can see them.

We didn't set out to build a payments company. Stokvel Chommie never holds or moves your group's money — that still happens bank-to-bank or in person, exactly how your group already does it. What we built is the missing layer underneath that: a shared, honest record that every member — not just the treasurer — can see for themselves.

What we actually care about

🛡️

No unilateral edits

A contribution or payout only counts once both sides confirm it. Neither the treasurer nor a member can mark something as done alone.

📜

Nothing hidden

Every confirmation, login, and change writes a permanent line to an audit trail the whole group can see — nothing edited quietly after the fact.

🗣️

Honest, not hype

We won't quote you sector-wide statistics we can't source, promise features that don't exist yet, or dress up a once-off fee as something it isn't.

Part of the Chommie family

🌐 Part of chommie.site

Stokvel Chommie is one of the tools that make up chommie.site, alongside Ja Nee Chommie — built around the same idea: real problems South Africans deal with every day deserve software that actually understands the context, instead of a generic template with the currency changed to Rand.
